The Gravel

The gravel are rock particles, bigger than sand, bigger than 2 mm. They may results form in situ weathering or rock breakdown during transport. Similarly as in the case of sand, once deposited they may create sediment bodies up to few tens metres thick and few hundreds of metres laterally extensive. Looking into internal organization of particles, one may infere about the mode of transport and deposition, while looking into the lithology of clasts one may establish the provenance of the gravel.

More information, photos and interesting characteristics of gravel, including examples of sedimentary structures, will follow here and also on blog.
